Venture Capital is the money that investors give to entrepreneurs to help them start their business or fund expansions to already existing businesses. It’s a riskier form of financing than traditional lending because investors are investing their own money directly into the business – as opposed to working with a bank. This type of capital can help new or existing companies develop products, expand into other markets, and attract new customers.
Venture capital typically comes from angel investors and venture capitalists, who may or may not have a direct stake in the business. Angel investors are often wealthy individuals who can make a large financial contribution to the business. Venture capitalists are larger organizations that may bring their own benefits, such as a wealth of knowledge and experience on their particular niche, or the ability to introduce the business to other members of their network.
Venture Capital can be an invaluable resource for entrepreneurs who are looking to develop a new product or expand their existing operations. However, venture capitalists usually have their own interests in mind and will need to be convinced that the venture has a good chance of succeeding.
For example, a startup that is developing a new medical device might be looking for venture capital to fund the development and market entrance of the device. The venture capital firm will likely use a set criteria to determine the viability of the project and make a decision to provide the necessary funding. In exchange for the venture capital, the firm may receive equity in the company or a percentage of future profits. With the venture capital, the company will be able to bring the product to market faster and more efficiently, allowing it to reap the rewards of becoming a successful business.
